Animal Keeper Associate: Vet Hospital

About the Role & Team

Disney’s Animal Kingdom is seeking candidates for an Animal Keeper Associate position in the Veterinary Hospital. In this role, you will work with a team of keepers to carry out the day to day care of the animals in the Disney's Animal Kingdom veterinary hospital, in our quarantine facility and for our wildlife cases. You must demonstrate knowledge and understanding of general husbandry, enrichment, and behavioral conditioning as it relates to the daily management and research of a diverse collection of animal species.

This is a full time, hourly role. You will report to the Veterinary Hospital Manager.

What You Will Do

  • Provide daily husbandry; feeding, cleaning, monitoring behavior and health
  • Assess animals in our care and communicating necessary information to the Hospital Veterinary Manager, their fellow keepers, the veterinarians and other staff
  • Administer all medications, treatments and supportive care to animals as directed by the veterinary staff
  • Participate in health exams for hospitalized and quarantined animals; responsible for assisting with capture, restraint, exam and recovery
  • Assist with medical procedures and animal emergencies in the field and in the hospital
  • Provide approved enrichment items
  • Train animals as outlined in approved plans provided by Animal Husbandry Zoo Managers
  • Ensure the safety of animals and fellow cast members; following established protocols when working with all animals (shifting, feeding, cleaning, training, restraining for exams); using good judgment when reacting to animal and/or emergency situations
  • Keeping accurate records; computer proficiency with a variety of programs

In addition, the hospital keepers take an active role and participate in department projects; they follow the leadership expectations of the company and the department; they are responsible for daily guest interactions.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Minimum of one year paid animal husbandry experience in an AZA accredited facility or institution with comparable standards
  • Ability to work with a variety of taxa: large and small birds; amphibians; reptiles; small mammals; carnivores; primates; large and small hoof stock (all the animals in Disney’s Animal Kingdom’s collection)
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the role including working outdoors, lifting/moving heavy objects (bales of hay, bags of grain)
  • Observation, evaluation and data collecting skills
  • Experience applying operant conditioning techniques in the field.

Education

  • High school degree or equivalent plus a minimum of either:
  • One year paid experience as a keeper in a AZA accredited institution, or in an institution with equivalent standards, and/or at least two years of verifiable college course work (60 semester hours)

Preferred Education

  • Bachelor's or Associate's Degree in Zoology or related field
  • Two years of verifiable college course work (60 semester hours)
