General Animal Curator

Zoo New York is seeking an experienced and dedicated General Animal Curator to lead our team of animal care professionals. This leadership role is essential in guiding the zoo towards achieving AZA accreditation, ensuring the highest standards of animal care, habitat development, and regulatory compliance. The ideal candidate will be a committed leader with a strong background in animal care, ability to effectively join a leadership team and a passion for wildlife conservation.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead and manage the animal care team, fostering an environment of excellence in animal welfare.
Oversee the development and maintenance of animal habitats, ensuring they are safe, enriching, and engaging for both the animals and visitors.
Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations, including those of AZA, USDA, and other state and federal agencies.
Collaborate closely with the Executive Director to set strategic goals and direction for the zoo's growth and development.
Mentor and train staff and students, particularly through our partnership with SUNY Jefferson Community College.
Develop and maintain partnerships with local communities, scientific organizations, and conservation groups to support the zoo's educational and conservation missions.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in biological life sciences or a related field.
Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in an accredited zoological institution.
Proven leadership skills with a strong commitment to animal welfare and conservation.
Ability to work effectively in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

Physical Requirements:

The position requires physical activities such as standing, climbing, and lifting in various weather conditions.

Compensation and Benefits:

Salary: $55,000 - $65,000 per year.
